Pursuant to a Voluntary Compliance Agreement signed on March 27, 2023, the GCC-IBT Local 406C will conduct a new election and installation for the office of President under the Secretary of Labor’s supervision in July 2023. The Office of Labor-Management Standards (OLMS) of the U.S. Department of Labor is responsible for assuring the election is conducted in accordance with Title IV of the Labor Management Reporting and Disclosure Act of 1959 (LMRDA). Under the OLMS General Rules of the supervised rerun election for Local 406 president, incumbent President Mike LaSpina and challenger Mr. Ted Phillips can email members through the Local 406 website.

Union members:

 Elections have consequences and now is not the time to lose Local 406’s experienced negotiator. 

The Local faces key challenges in the coming months: 

• Complete negotiations for contracts for the newsday.com and multimedia production staffers that voted to join the Local. 
• Resolve the many problems arising from the return-to-work regimen with Newsday management.
• Participate in the reconstitution of the International (GCC to the Printing, Packaging and Production Workers Union) in the wake of the divorce from the Teamsters. 

The resolution of each of these matters will impact all of us. 

Within the Local’s leadership, the interests of journalists are well represented by Liisa May and Deborah Morris, who serve as secretary-treasurer and recording secretary, respectively.  

We are also lucky to have champions such as Zachary Dowdy and Judy Weinberg who were instrumental in organizing Newsday’s digital and multimedia staffs with the support of Michael LaSpina. 

I’ve spoken with both candidates and thought long and hard about who should lead Local 406 at this critical time. For me, the choice is clear. 

Please join me in supporting incumbent president Michael LaSpina, who I believe is best qualified to defend our livelihoods.
