Pursuant to a Voluntary Compliance Agreement signed on March 27, 2023, the GCC-IBT Local 406C will conduct a new election and installation for the office of President under the Secretary of Labor’s supervision in July 2023. The Office of Labor-Management Standards (OLMS) of the U.S. Department of Labor is responsible for assuring the election is conducted in accordance with Title IV of the Labor Management Reporting and Disclosure Act of 1959 (LMRDA). Under the OLMS General Rules of the supervised rerun election for Local 406 president, incumbent President Mike LaSpina and challenger Mr. Ted Phillips can email members through the Local 406 website

All you need to do is create a free account, which, as an experienced business journalist, I’m sure you are aware of. The 2021 and 2020 Form 990s are available as well as older ones.

The guidestar.org database is available to all, and I know several Local 406-C members who have used it to review the union’s finances in recent years.

I, and many other Local 406-C members, have full faith and confidence in Liisa May as our secretary-treasurer. Her ethics and professionalism are of the highest standard, unchanged from when Newsday entrusted her to edit copy for the newspaper and website.

Neither you nor I have ever been an officer of the Local. So, our knowledge of an officer’s duties is limited. However, I know Liisa to be a person of integrity. I ask that you publicly apologize for tarnishing her reputation.
